The Germans, in particular the Kaiser, took Mahan to heart but never realy understood him. Germany did not have the basic requists that Mahan sets out for
a naval power. Not enough maritime populace nor the protected frontiers which allow for small land forces. Mahan was quite explicit on this as the reason
for the failure of France to over come England and why England was able to supplant the Dutch.

Just point ut that "The war in the air" was by HGWElls.
I read it masny years ago and remeber it impressed me evn more than the more famous "War of the worlds". HPLovecraft was into something else entirely - Cthulthu. Enjoying this thread

Yep, my mistake. I just had reread some old story of Lovecraft and thus the names got mixed up. Wells was a keen observer of political feelings, though. He did
some good historical works after WWI, too.
